Raise your wineglass in celebration and pound some grape as Cougar Town returns for Season 4 on its new home, TBS, beginning Jan. 8 (Tuesdays at 10pm ET/9pm CT). Early last year when ABC was waffling with the series’ future, TBS made an enthusiastic bid for the quirky comedy, winning over the show’s executive producers and landing them a permanent prime-time slot on the network that’s all about “very funny.”
The series follows once-divorced-now-newly-remarried (as of the Season 3 finale) fortysomething Jules Cobb (Courteney Cox), her extended family of dysfunctional, lovable neighbors, and their overindulgences with wine and the oddities of life. Busy Philipps, who plays Jules’ protégé Laurie, was in between hair and makeup when she jumped on the phone to talk to us about the new season.
“It’s kind of incredible, really amazing to get this new life as a show in its fourth season. Nothing has changed,” Philipps says, in regards to the move to TBS. “No one is taking pay cuts, no budget crunches around the set — basically we’re doing the same show. Writers are pushing the envelope with their goofy storylines and the situations our characters get into. … When we came back to work in August, it felt like we hadn’t missed a beat.”
Season 4 picks up with Jules and Grayson (Josh Hopkins) dealing with the dynamic shift of being married. “They have this whole thing about setting precedents once you’ve gotten married,” Philipps shares. “If you bring me a cup of coffee in the morning, you always have to bring me a cup of coffee in the morning — you have set that precedent.”
Now that they are living under the same roof, Grayson needs to sell his house, which means a good opportunity for new neighbors in the cul-de-sac. As for who that could be, Philipps shares a little. “I will say that we had a fabulous guest star appearance by Miss Shirley Jones. It was kind of incredible to have television royalty stop by, so hopefully she’ll be back. I think maybe she will.”
As for Laurie and Travis’ (Dan Byrd) ongoing flirtations, Philipps says that this season the two will have some definite ups and downs. “She does have this boyfriend who is great and amazing, so that does cause a bit of conflict for her and Travis.”
Cougar Town returns on Jan. 8 at 10pm ET/9pm CT on TBS.
Sassy actress Busy Philipps (Cougar Town) laughs about the misadventures of growing up on the outside looking in. She shares her mortifying experiences with skateboarder crushes, an inspired prom dress, and a curiously autobiographical play.

Juggling work and motherhood can be a tricky balancing act, but Cougar Town actress Busy Philipps has found crafty ways to pack in more quality time with her daughter Birdie. For starters, the actress gives her tot space behind the scenes to run the show.
“I have my dressing room set up as a playroom and my four-year-old actually said to my husband [Marc Silverstein] a few weeks ago: ‘Dad, they got rid of mom’s dressing room at Cougar Town and they made it into my playroom.’”
Of course, Busy’s dressing room still has her name on it, but she’s created a special haven on the kid-friendly set, where her daughter also plays with co-star Courteney Cox’s daughter, Coco. (The two actresses hang out too, they’ve collaborated on a One Kings Lane charity home decor sale to benefit The Art of Elysium that starts tonight at 9 p.m. ET.) “Look, when you’re a parent who has to work a lot you have to catch as much time with your kid as possible,” Philipps says. “I fill [my dressing room] with special toys that she doesn’t have at home and only has at work, and then it’s like a special treat to come visit me.”
A Dora the Explorer version of the popular Candy Land board game, LEGOs, and Calico Corner décor are treats that stay at work. At home, Philipps says they’re fans of Nickelodeon’s Team Umizoomi, and then there’s music and audiobook fun on the road. “Birdie’s music teacher, Melissa Green released her own children’s album, we listen to it in the car and she loves.” An audio recording of Little Golden Books that Philipps helped record alongside celebs like Alicia Silverstone and Cheryl Hines is another car favorite.
“She loves listening to the stories in the car! It’s funny because in my first story I say, ‘Hi, this is Busy Philipps, and I’m reading The Frog Prince‘ and she goes, ‘Busy Philipps!? That’s so weird mom! That’s your name!’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, because it’s me,’ and she’s like, ‘What!?’ She had no concept.”

Cougar Town (and, previously, Dawson’s Creek and Freaks and Geeks) actress Busy Philipps has partnered with fellow CT star Courtney Cox to curate a 72-hour flash sale with One Kings Lane that benefits the charity Art of Elysium (you can actually buy things from their own home!). We chatted with her about what’s in her sale, Cougar Town’s move from ABC to TBS, the fun prank she plays on set, and more!
Tell us about your partnership with Courtney Cox, Art of Elysium, and One Kings Lane!
Well, Courtney and I both sort of independently have been involved in a charity called Art of Elysium. It’s a charity that brings artists, actors, and musicians together with critically ill kids. It provides different programs where the artists work with the kids—do different things a day with them, try to bring a bright side in their hospital stay and with their families as well. So, One Kings Lane was interested in doing a charity sale with all of the proceeds going to Art of Elysium that Courtney and I would curate. In addition to us curating and picking from vintage and antique and one of a kind items that are going to be on the sale, she and I both ransacked our houses, storage units, and we donated our own items from our homes to go up for sale as well! It’s going to be a new place for people to be able to buy things from me and Courtney that we think are cool and that we had in our house, and then also give to this wonderful program that does amazing work with these critically ill children in hospitals.
What’s your aesthetic for the things you’re putting up for sale?
Well, it’s a little eclectic, and we have some stuff from when my husband and I got married. We both owned our own homes, so we bought a house together and decided to blend our styles. It’s not easy, you know. My husband has great taste, and he takes the lead on the architecture and design in the front from me. So there were things we couldn’t find room for in our house. This was a good opportunity for me to think, ‘OK is this beautiful 1960s lamp going to be used in my house, or should I just donate them to charity?’ And so we did. We had these weird Thai masks, that were on my husband’s shelf when he was a bachelor, and I loved them—they were so weird! I saw them all on One Kings Lane before, on somebody else’s sale. They’ve been stuffed in a drawer for so long, and when I went to go find stuff to put up for sale, I thought, ‘Perfect! What do you know!’ I’m personally obsessed with One Kings Lane. I love it.
Switching gears… So, obviously, the big news with Cougar Town is the switch to TBS. Are you excited about it? Do you think it’ll be good for the show?
Oh, yeah! I think it’s going to be great for the show. I mean, look, we were unfortunately a television victim of moving time slots and moving days. It’s just hard… it’s hard on a show, it wears the show down, your fans don’t know where to find you sometimes. My mom didn’t even know when we were on! So I think it’s great. TBS is really excited about the show. They’ve been really creative in the promos that we’ve shot that they’ll start airing in the way that they’re going to present the show [which airs January 8]. It’s going to be soon. The holidays are going to happen, then it’s going to be Cougar Town time!
Do you feel that switching to cable is going to allow for more freedom with the show?
You know what’s great about TBS is that they weren’t even looking for us to sex it up, make it racier. They genuinely love the show, and they want us to keep doing the show that we were doing. And you know… that’s so awesome. I love that they love the show so much. That’s also what’s so reassuring—it’s not like they wanted to take the show, and then re-tool everything. It’s going to be the same Cougar Town, the same wine, same weirdness of the cul-de-sac crew, and we’ve been having a lot of fun. We’ve already shot like five episodes, and Courtney directed like half of them. It’s awesome. She’s a great director; she’s so fun when she’s directing. It’s crazy relaxed, but we get it done. I’m very optimistic. I wasn’t sure when I first heard, you know, I was a little nervous myself. I thought, ‘What is this going to be like?’ But it’s been great, and I’m so happy.
How would you like to see your character Laurie evolve next season? Or not at all, if you think she’s perfect…
Um, ha, I love her, I really do love her. She really has to figure out her love life. She’s got this great boyfriend, Wade, who is in Afghanistan, and I don’t know what she’s doing with Jule’s son. He’s a little bit of a… turns out, we didn’t know this is going to happen, but turns out… that the only cougar on the whole show is 29 years old! The irony. I do want her to straighten things out in her relationship department. But I’m doing a lot of fun stuff with my eye make-up this year, I saw on all the blogs.
That was my next question: how was your eye makeup going to evolve over next season!
That is a good question! You know I do my own makeup on the show? There’s a makeup artist who watches me on set, but yeah, I get myself ready. I do my own makeup. I prefer it. It’s really soothing to me to do my own makeup. I kind of don’t like getting my makeup done that much, and since I do it everyday I know how to do it quickly and efficiently, and I like to experiment with different eye makeup and different liner colors. I just like to play around. I am a girl who loves makeup, so sue me. So, it’s one of the fun parts of my job. I feel like it really adds a lot to my character, so I find time to try and do new stuff, and I read the blogs.
So what’s your favorite behind-the-scenes moment from filming Cougar Town? It’s such a fun cast, I’m sure there’s a ton.
Well, Christa [Miller] and I do this bit that we love so much—we pretend that Josh Hopkins has been fired, but no one has told him yet and that John Stamos is coming on to replace him. Especially when we are doing those big group scenes when we’re all together, that’s one of my favorite, favorite bits to do with Christa. She’s also one of those comedians that won’t break. She will not let go of the bit. She just takes it until the end. As long as she can do it, she will do it, and it cracks me up. And Josh plays into it and loves it too. But like, yeah, ‘You’ve been replaced by John Stamos, and no one has told him yet so, be cool about it! He doesn’t know yet.’
Be sure to check out Busy’s sale now at One Kings Lane! But act fast, because the sale only lasts until this Sunday, Sept. 23!
